The purpose of the History curriculum at The Howard School is:
- to develop a knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world through a study of local, national and international events.
- to inspire curiosity and foster a love of the subject via an enquiry and skills driven curriculum that promotes independence and resilience as well as developing key historical and critical skills such as cause, consequence, significance and analysis.
- to develop our students’ ability to critically evaluate contemporary sources and interpretations in order to make judgements, assess the extent of change and assess validity.
- to develop our students’ understanding of the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their helping our students to understand their own identity and the challenges of their time via the links between curriculum content delivered from year 7 to 13.
- to develop a historical perspective by placing growing knowledge into different political, social, economic and religious contexts in order to foster a sense of cultural and social identity.
- to develop our students’ ability to communicate knowledge and understanding in well-written arguments, that are clearly expressed, coherently organised and effectively supported by relevant evidence.
