| Police in School |
At The Howard School we always aim to co-operate fully with the Police. We invite them to contribute to the curriculum and are keen to work with them where students involve themselves in criminal activity.
The Police may be called if a serious criminal offence has taken place, ie violence causing bodily harm, criminal damage, arson, serious theft, and possession of drugs or weapon.
Pupils will only be interviewed by the Police in the presence of a parent/carer or in their absence another adult ie teacher, who is not a police officer. Permission from parent/carer must be sought before the interview takes place. The school acts in loco parentis and will act as a reasonable parent/carer would to safeguard the rights and freedoms of the child. |

| Smoke Free Policy |
Purpose
This policy has been created to protect all employees, casual workers, visitors, clients, customers, contractors, suppliers or staff members of other organisations, from exposure to second-hand smoke and to assist the Company's compliance with the various legislation that is in force in the United Kingdom.
Exposure to second-hand smoke, also known as passive smoking, increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease and other illnesses. Ventilation, air conditioning or separating smokers from non-smokers within the same airspace does not completely stop potentially dangerous exposure.
All THE HOWARD SCHOOL owned, leased or Operated workplaces are non-smoking.
This policy takes effect without exception on the 1st JULY 2007.
Smoking is prohibited throughout each entire workplace. This policy applies to all employees, casual workers, visitors, and clients, customers, contractors, suppliers or staff members of other organisations. This includes all Company vehicles, it should also be noted that smoking within your own vehicle is prohibited on the school site or within 500 yards of the school entrance.
There is no legal requirement for an employer to provide a designated smoking area or shelter for employees or others.
Implementation
All persons working in or attending ‘our’ premises are entitled to a smoke free environment.
Management will inform all existing employees, casual workers, visitors, clients, customers, contractors, suppliers or staff members of other organisations of the policy and their responsibility in the implementation and monitoring of the policy. They will also ensure that new employees receive a copy of the policy at induction and that their training record card is appropriately signed.
Appropriate 'No Smoking' signs will be clearly displayed at the entrance to, and within, the premises.
Non-Compliance
If an employee or temporary worker does not comply with this policy they will be liable to disciplinary action. In addition anyone who does not comply with the no-smoking law is also liable to a fine of up to £200.
Help to Stop Smoking
Employers have a duty of care to all employees and casual workers to supply information on stopping smoking with support from local cessation services. The NHS Smoking Help line number is 0800 1690169. Lines are open daily from 7am to 11pm. The Help line can offer advice and support on stopping smoking along with a website normally available at www.qosmokefree.co.uk |
